Navigation Hazard: Low-Hanging Wires at Hartley Bridge

Attention Masters of Vessels and Waterway Users on the Shannon
Waterways Ireland advises that the hazardous obstruction at Hartley Bridge (midway between Carrick-on-Shannon and Leitrim) remains in place, as previously communicated in Marine Notice 20 (12 March 2025).

- - Eircom wires continue to hang approximately 1.5 meters below the bridge on the southern side, posing a serious risk to high-profile vessels.
  - Masters of high-profile vessels must proceed with extreme caution when navigating under Hartley Bridge.
  - Dead slow ahead speed is recommended for high-profile vessels.
  - If necessary, lowering masts and antenna arrays is strongly advised.

- - Waterways Ireland has contacted Eircom to resolve this issue as a priority.
  - Further updates will be issued as soon as the hazard is cleared.

Gefahr für die Schifffahrt: Niedrig hängende Drähte an der Hartley-Brücke
Achtung: Kapitäne von Schiffen und Wasserstraßenbenutzer auf dem Shannon
Waterways Ireland weist darauf hin, dass das gefährliche Hindernis an der Hartley-Brücke (auf halber Strecke zwischen Carrick-on-Shannon und Leitrim) weiterhin besteht, wie bereits in der Marine Notice 20 (12. März 2025) mitgeteilt.

- - Die Eircom-Drähte hängen weiterhin etwa 1,5 Meter unterhalb der Brücke auf der Südseite und stellen eine ernsthafte Gefahr für hochrangige Schiffe dar.
  - Kapitäne von Hochseeschiffen müssen bei der Durchfahrt unter der Hartley-Brücke mit äußerster Vorsicht vorgehen.
  - Für auffällige Schiffe wird eine langsame Fahrt voraus empfohlen.
  - Falls erforderlich, wird dringend empfohlen, Masten und Antennenanlagen zu senken.

Maßnahmen laufen

- - Waterways Ireland hat sich mit Eircom in Verbindung gesetzt, um dieses Problem vorrangig zu beheben.
  - Weitere Informationen werden veröffentlicht, sobald die Gefahr beseitigt ist.

Canoe Polo Events, Mullingar Harbour

Waterways Ireland advises Masters of vessels that Canoe Polo events will take place in Mullingar Harbour on the following dates:

- - April 6th, 2025 – Mullingar Junior Canoe Polo
  - June 27th – 29th, 2025 – Mullingar Open Canoe Polo Competition
  - August 15th – 17th, 2025 – Overlord Canoe Polo Camp
  - August 22nd – 24th, 2025 – Irish Open International Canoe Polo Competition

Navigation Restrictions & Mooring Arrangements
To facilitate these events, navigation in the area will be restricted between 08:00 and 18:00 on event days. Specifically:

- - Vessels may be requested to temporarily relocate from moorings in the harbour area to facilitate space and access for the event.
  - Vessel movement in the vicinity of the event will be coordinated by event organisers.

Masters of vessels are requested to:

- - Navigate with caution in the vicinity of the events.
  - Follow instructions from event organisers.

Waterways Ireland weist die Kapitäne von Schiffen darauf hin, dass im Hafen von Mullingar an den folgenden Tagen Kanupolo-Veranstaltungen stattfinden werden:

- - 6. April 2025 – Mullingar Junior Canoe Polo
  - 27. bis 29. Juni 2025 – Mullingar Open Canoe Polo Competition
  - 15. bis 17. August 2025 – Overlord Canoe Polo Camp
  - 22. bis 24. August 2025 – Irish Open International Canoe Polo Competition

Navigation Restrictions & Mooring Arrangements
Um diese Veranstaltungen zu ermöglichen, wird die Schifffahrt in diesem Gebiet an den Veranstaltungstagen zwischen 08:00 und 18:00 Uhr eingeschränkt. Im Einzelnen:

- - Schiffe können aufgefordert werden, ihre Liegeplätze im Hafengebiet vorübergehend zu verlegen, um Platz und Zugang für die Veranstaltung zu schaffen.
  - Die Schiffsbewegungen in der Nähe der Veranstaltung werden von den Veranstaltern koordiniert.

Die Kapitäne der Schiffe werden gebeten,:

- - Seien Sie in der Nähe der Veranstaltungen vorsichtig.
  - Befolgen Sie die Anweisungen der Organisatoren der Veranstaltung.

1st April 2025 Notice Public Harbour

End of Winter Mooring Period

Waterways Ireland advises Masters of vessels that the winter mooring period ended on 31 March 2025, after which the following Bye-laws apply:

Shannon Navigation Bye-law No. 17(3):

- Vessels must not berth in the same harbour for more than 5 consecutive days.
- A vessel may not remain in the same harbour for more than 7 days in any one month.

Lough Erne Bye-laws – Mooring of Vessels and Boats No. 19:

- No vessel may remain moored at or near a public mooring for more than 48 consecutive hours.
- A new 48-hour period begins only after the vessel has been absent from the mooring for at least four hours.

These Bye-laws are in place to ensure fair and equitable access to public moorings and will be enforced by Inspectorate staff. Masters are to comply accordingly. Waterways Ireland thanks its customers for their co-operation.

1. April 2025 Marine Notice – Public Harbour Ende der Winterliegezeit
Waterways Ireland weist die Kapitäne von Schiffen darauf hin, dass die Winterliegezeit am 31. März 2025 endet und danach die folgenden Bye-laws gelten:
Shannon Navigation Bye-law No. 17(3):

- Schiffe dürfen nicht länger als 5 aufeinanderfolgende Tage im selben Hafen anlegen.
- Ein Schiff darf in einem Monat nicht länger als 7 Tage im selben Hafen liegen.

Lough Erne Bye-laws – Festmachen von Schiffen und Booten Nr. 19:

- Kein Schiff darf länger als 48 aufeinanderfolgende Stunden an einem öffentlichen Liegeplatz oder in dessen Nähe festgemacht bleiben.
- Eine neue 48-Stunden-Frist beginnt erst, wenn das Schiff mindestens vier Stunden lang nicht an der Anlegestelle gelegen hat.

Diese Vorschriften sollen einen fairen und gleichberechtigten Zugang zu öffentlichen Liegeplätzen gewährleisten und werden von den Mitarbeitern der Aufsichtsbehörde durchgesetzt. Die Kapitäne haben sich entsprechend zu verhalten. Waterways Ireland dankt seinen Gästen für ihre Kooperation.

Low Water Levels

Waterways Ireland advises masters of vessels that water levels across all waterways are currently at or below normal summer levels due to low seasonal rainfall.
This link brings users to Waterways Ireland datum levels for the River Shannon Water Levels. Water levels on the River Shannon are managed using gates and sluices at the outlets of the three major lakes, and sluices and weirs at Jamestown, Roosky, Tarmonbarry, Meelick, and the New Cut. Despite these operations, the shallow gradient and natural restrictions prevent full control.
Water levels on the Erne system are particularly low, and canal levels remain reduced, with ongoing efforts to manage. There are also concerns about Water levels on the Barrow.
All available measures within Waterways Ireland’s control are being implemented to retain water, including sluice gate management, dredging, lock gate control, and engagement with external stakeholders.
Navigation guidance for masters:

- Stay within marked navigation channels
- Plan passages carefully, considering vessel draft.
- Adhere to local speed limits and exercise caution in restricted channels.

Waterways Ireland weist die Kapitäne von Schiffen darauf hin, dass die Wasserstände auf allen Wasserstraßen aufgrund der geringen saisonalen Niederschläge derzeit auf oder unter dem normalen Sommerniveau liegen.
Über diesen Link gelangen Sie zu den Wasserstandsdaten von Waterways Ireland für den River Shannon. Die Wasserstände des Shannon werden mit Hilfe von Toren und Schleusen an den Ausläufen der drei großen Seen sowie mit Schleusen und Wehren in Jamestown, Roosky, Tarmonbarry, Meelick und am New Cut geregelt. Trotz dieser Maßnahmen lässt sich das Wasser aufgrund des geringen Gefälles und der natürlichen Einschränkungen nicht vollständig kontrollieren.
Die Wasserstände im Erne-System sind besonders niedrig, und die Wasserstände in den Canals sind nach wie vor niedrig, wobei die Bemühungen um ein Management fortgesetzt werden. Auch die Wasserstände des Barrow geben Anlass zur Sorge.
Waterways Ireland ergreift alle verfügbaren Maßnahmen, um das Wasser zurückzuhalten, einschließlich Schleusenmanagement, Ausbaggerung, Schleusenkontrolle und Zusammenarbeit mit externen Interessengruppen.
Navigationshinweise für Kapitäne:

- Bleiben Sie innerhalb der markierten Fahrrinnen
- Planen Sie die Durchfahrten sorgfältig und berücksichtigen Sie den Tiefgang des Schiffes.
- Halten Sie sich an die örtlichen Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungen und seien Sie in begrenzten Fahrrinnen vorsichtig.

Marine Notice No. 25 of 2025 – Grand Canal

Hazard Notification- Issued: 27 March 2025

Marine Notice – Grand Canal Closure at Devonshire Bridge

Waterways Ireland advises masters of vessels and waterway users that the Grand Canal is closed for all vessel navigation from 13th Lock to the 14th Lock due to significant damage to Devonshire Bridge. This closure is effective immediately as of 18:00 on Thursday, 27 March 2025, and will remain in place until further notice.
This closure is a safety precaution following a major bridge strike by a road vehicle. As a result, the bridge parapet is unstable, posing a risk to navigation and public safety – see image below. This closure is unrelated to the planned closure of L’Estrange Bridge on 29-30 March 2025, see Marine Notice 24.
Location Details:

- Devonshire Bridge is situated approx. 150m northeast of the 14th Lock.
- Devonshire Bridge is crossed by the L2010, Sherlockstown Common, Killeenbeg, Co. Kildare, near Killeen Golf Club.

Restrictions in Place:

- The canal is closed between 13th Lock to the 14th Lock due to limited space for vessels to turn on this section of the canal.
- The Greenway remains open.
- Vehicular access over the bridge is also restricted. Kildare County Council have installed a traffic management system on the L2010.

Bekanntmachung über die Marine Notice Nr. 25 von 2025 – Grand Canal,
Gefahrenmitteilung- Ausgegeben: 27. März 2025
Marine Notice – Schließung des Grand Canal an der Devonshire Bridge
Waterways Ireland weist die Kapitäne von Schiffen und die Nutzer der Wasserstraße darauf hin, dass der Grand Canal von der 13. Schleuse bis zur 14. Schleuse wegen erheblicher Schäden an der Devonshire-Brücke für die gesamte Schifffahrt gesperrt ist. Die Sperrung gilt ab Donnerstag, den 27. März 2025, 18:00 Uhr, und wird bis auf weiteres aufrechterhalten.
Die Sperrung ist eine Sicherheitsvorkehrung nach einem schweren Brückenanschlag durch ein Straßenfahrzeug. Infolgedessen ist die Brückenbrüstung instabil und stellt eine Gefahr für die Schifffahrt und die öffentliche Sicherheit dar – siehe Bild unten. Diese Sperrung steht in keinem Zusammenhang mit der geplanten Sperrung der Brücke von L’Estrange am 29. und 30. März 2025, siehe Bekanntmachung über die Marine Notice 24.
Angaben zum Standort:

- Die Devonshire-Brücke befindet sich ca. 150 m nordöstlich der 14. Schleuse.
- Die Devonshire-Brücke wird von der L2010, Sherlockstown Common, Killeenbeg, Co. Kildare, in der Nähe des Killeen Golf Club.

Beschränkungen bestehen:

- Der Kanal ist zwischen der 13. und der 14. Schleuse gesperrt, da auf diesem Abschnitt des Kanals nur wenig Platz für Schiffe zum Wenden vorhanden ist.
- Der Greenway bleibt geöffnet.
- Die Zufahrt für Fahrzeuge über die Brücke ist ebenfalls eingeschränkt. Der Kildare County Council hat ein Verkehrsleitsystem auf der L2010 installiert.
