MARINE NOTICE, No.135 of 2015

SHANNON NAVIGATION

Athlone Coosan Lough

Vessel Aground

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters of craft that a vessel has grounded in the channel linking Coosan and Killenure Loughs thereby reducing severely the available navigation width. Only small boats may make a passage at this time. Masters should proceed with due caution.

Masters are reminded to risk assess the dangers associated with trying to tow a grounded vessel using deck mooring cleats or other strong points to attach a tow line. These should be of adequate strength, adequately stiffened and secured under deck and be sufficient to withstand the load of the tow. Likewise, there is danger of recoil and snap back when a towline comes under tension which can cause serious injury.
