Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and owners of vessels that due to the current high water levels on the River Barrow, which is causing delays in proposed works, Bagenalstown Lock remains closed. A further update will be issued in early April.

Grand Canal – Main Line
Sallins, Co. Kildare
The canal and the public jetty have opened following recent construction works. The longer-term moorings will remain closed until the services are available at this jetty
Lock 29, Ballycowan to Lock 30, Rahan
Closed from 13th October 2014 to late December 2014 for structural repairs to Charleville Aqueduct.
Grand Canal – Barrow Line
Glenaree Bridge to Rathangan Bridge
Closed from 28th October 2014 to early January 2015 for winter dredging.
Spencer Bridge to Wilson Bridge
Closed from January 2015 to mid March 2015 for winter dredging.
Vicarstown
Closed from 29th October to end of November 2014 for essential repairs to Vicarstown Bridge.
Royal Canal
Spencer Dock, Newcomen Bridge
There will be no further lifts of Newcomen railway bridge until the 2015 boating season.
1st Level, Portland Place
Structural repairs to the towpath will be undertaken from the end of October 2014 to late December 2014 – the canal will be closed for the duration of the works.
35th Level, Balroe, Co. Westmeath
Closed from 13th October 2014 until further notice for essential construction works.
Barrow Navigation
Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow
Closed at Bagenalstown mid March for essential repairs.

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise that that The Barrow Navigation will be closed at Bagenalstown Lock from Monday 22nd September 2014 until the end of February 2015. A dam is to be placed in position in the navigation channel about 150 meters downstream of Bagenalstown Lock. This is to facilitate a contractor carrying out essential wall repairs.

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all masters and users of the Royal and Grand Canals and Barrow Navigation that due to the prolonged dry and warm weather, water levels have fallen in recent weeks and weedgrowth accelerated on the waterways
Masters of vessels, particularly those with deep drafts, are advised to proceed with due caution when navigating the Royal and Grand Canals and Barrow Navigation. Additional time should be factored in to complete longer journeys.
Should any further updates on specific areas be necessary, these will issue as separate notices.
Waterways Ireland TriAthy Triathlon Event at Sat 31 May 2014
Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and owners of vessels that the swim element of the above event will take place in Athy on Sat 31 May from 0700hrs until 2100hrs.
Masters are requested to proceed at slow speed and with minimum wash when passing this section of the river and heed any instructions issued by the event marshals and in particular to keep a look-out for swimmers in the water.
