Lanesborough Triathlon Swim

Waterways Ireland seeks to inform masters of vessels that a swim event will take place as part of the Lanesborough Triathlon. This is a second swim on the Shannon Navigation in addition to the Lough Derg Gael Force Portumna swim, also on Saturday 11 July: Marine Notice No. 71 of 2026
Event Details
Saturday, 11 July 2026 – swim area out of bounds: 10:45–13:30 hrs
. The swim course is located south of the road bridge at Lanesborough, extending across the navigation between Lanesborough and Ballyleague, see Page 14 of the Shannon Erne Navigation Guide.

Navigation Restrictions. During the event, the designated swim area will be closed to all vessel traffic, except for authorised safety and event craft. Masters of vessels are requested to:

      • Hold position north of Ballyleague Marina or south of Ballyclare Island / Ballyclare Point until the event has concluded.
      • Comply with all instructions issued by event marshals and safety boats.
      • Proceed only when advised that navigation has fully reopened following confirmation that all swimmers are safely clear of the water.

Waterways Ireland möchte die Schiffsführer darüber informieren, dass im Rahmen des Lanesborough-Triathlons ein Schwimmwettbewerb stattfindet. Dies ist neben dem Schwimmen der „Lough Derg Gael Force Portumna“, das ebenfalls am Samstag, dem 11. Juli, stattfindet, bereits das zweite Schwimmereignis auf der Shannon-Schifffahrtsstrecke: Schifffahrtsmitteilung Nr. 71 von 2026
Veranstaltungsdetails
Samstag, 11. Juli 2026 – Schwimmbereich gesperrt: 10:45–13:30 Uhr. Die Schwimmstrecke befindet sich südlich der Straßenbrücke bei Lanesborough und erstreckt sich über die Wasserstraße zwischen Lanesborough und Ballyleague, siehe Seite 14 des „Shannon Erne Navigation Guide“.
Schifffahrtsbeschränkungen. Während der Veranstaltung ist der ausgewiesene Schwimmbereich für den gesamten Schiffsverkehr gesperrt, mit Ausnahme von autorisierten Sicherheits- und Veranstaltungsbooten. Schiffskapitäne werden gebeten:

      • Bis zum Ende der Veranstaltung nördlich der Ballyleague Marina oder südlich von Ballyclare Island / Ballyclare Point zu warten.
      • Alle Anweisungen der Veranstaltungshelfer und Sicherheitsboote zu befolgen.
      • Erst dann weiterzufahren, wenn mitgeteilt wird, dass die Schifffahrt wieder vollständig freigegeben ist, nachdem bestätigt wurde, dass sich alle Schwimmer sicher aus dem Wasser begeben haben.

Triathlon Event Sat 15 Jul

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and owners of vessels that the swim element of the above event will take place immediately downstream of the Lanesborough – Ballyleague bridge , on the eastern bank, on Sat 15 Jul between 1000 hrs and 1300 hrs.
Masters are requested to proceed at slow speed and with minimum wash when approaching this section of the navigation and heed any instructions issued by the event marshals.

Delays may be experienced. Masters are requested to give a wide berth and observe all directions issued from the safety boat in attendance.

on Wed 23 Jun between 19.30 hrs and 20.00hrs.
Masters are requested to proceed at slow speed and with minimum wash when approaching this section of the river and heed any instructions issued by the event marshals.

Lanesborough – Ballyleague Road Bridge

Essential WorksMovement and Control of Vessels

Further to Marine Notice No 34 of 2016 Waterways Ireland wishes to advise of the following control measures associated with these works commencing on Mon 25 April or shortly thereafter and continuing for approximately five weeks.
Access through the navigation arch will only be available between 1800hrs in the evening and 0600hrs the following morning, Monday through Friday.
Navigation will be open on Saturdays and Sundays as per normal.
The bridge will be closed to navigation by a string of orange / yellow buoys placed 50m north and south of the bridge.
Divers, workboats and associated equipment will be deployed in the immediate vicinity of the navigation arch and no through traffic for any craft will be permitted.
On completion of the daily work schedule equipment will be hauled off to one side of the bridge and the buoys removed to permit traffic between the hours stated above.
Masters of vessels approaching these works should note any directions given by the works safety boat and /or the lookouts placed north and south of the bridge during working hours who will be equipped with flags and klaxons.

International Code Flag „A“ (blue and white)  indicating the presence fo divers in the water will be displayed north and south f the bridge when divers are working.
Berthage is available at the old stone harbour immediately north of the bridge and also in the new marina harbour south of the bridge, both on the western side of the navigation.
