Temporary Navigation Closure

Waterways Ireland advises that the Limerick Narwhals “Limerick Island Swim 2026” takes place on:

Saturday 5 September 2026, starting at 12:30.

This is a 3.8 km swim around King’s Island on the River Shannon in Limerick City, starting and finishing at the pontoon beside the Hunt Museum.

Navigation & Safety Advisory

- - The swim route section of the River Shannon around King’s Island will be closed to all non-race vessels from 12:00 to 15:00 on the day of the event
  - Masters of vessels are to comply with instructions from event marshals and safety boats, to keep the racecourse clear
  - Respect the swimmers, they have right of way during the event
  - The navigation will re-open once all swimmers are clear of the water

Such closures are rare, yet necessary. Waterways Ireland thanks all waterway users for their cooperation and assistance in ensuring the safe and successful event.

Waterways Ireland teilt mit, dass das von den Limerick Narwhals organisierte „Limerick Island Swim 2026“ am Samstag, dem 5. September 2026, ab 12:30 Uhr stattfindet.
Es handelt sich um ein 3,8 km langes Schwimmrennen rund um King’s Island auf dem Fluss Shannon in Limerick City, das am Ponton neben dem Hunt Museum startet und endet.

Hinweise zur Navigation und Sicherheit

Der Abschnitt des Flusses Shannon rund um King’s Island entlang der

- - Schwimmstrecke ist am Tag der Veranstaltung von 12:00 bis 15:00 Uhr für alle nicht am Wettkampf teilnehmenden Wasserfahrzeuge gesperrt.
  - Bootfahrer müssen den Anweisungen der Veranstaltungshelfer und der Sicherheitsboote Folge leisten, um die Wettkampfstrecke frei zu halten.
  - Bitte nehmen Sie Rücksicht auf die Schwimmer; diese haben während der Veranstaltung Vorfahrt.
  - Die Navigation wird wieder freigegeben, sobald alle Schwimmer das Wasser verlassen haben.

Temporary Navigation Closure of Shannon:
Termonbarry Lock to Lanesborough

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters of vessels and all waterway users to ensure the safety of participants in the Gaelforce Swim event, the River Shannon will be temporarily closed to all vessels, except official safety craft, between Termonbarry Lock and Lanesborough on Saturday, 17 May, from 07:30 to 14:30 hrs.
Vessels travelling north from Tarmonbarry Harbour will be permitted to pass upstream through Termonbarry Lock once the 12km race has started, but no downstream passage will be allowed during the closure window.

Due to the confined nature of the navigation on this section of the Shannon, and the associated safety risks of mixing vessel traffic with swimmers, this temporary closure is considered essential.
Boaters intending to transit this section of the waterway are advised to consider making their journey on Friday 16 May, ahead of the closure.
We acknowledge that this notice has been issued at relatively short notice, and we apologise for the delay. Waterways Ireland endeavours to provide as much advance notice as possible for such events, and we appreciate your patience, cooperation, and understanding.

Schwimmveranstaltung Vorübergehende Schifffahrtssperrung des Shannon: Termonbarry Lock bis Lanesborough
Waterways Ireland möchte die Kapitäne von Schiffen und alle Wasserstraßennutzer darauf hinweisen, dass der Fluss Shannon am Samstag, den 17. Mai, von 07:30 bis 14:30 Uhr zwischen Termonbarry Lock und Lanesborough vorübergehend für alle Schiffe, mit Ausnahme der offiziellen Sicherheitsfahrzeuge, gesperrt wird, um die Sicherheit der Teilnehmer am Gaelforce Swim Event zu gewährleisten.
Schiffe, die von Tarmonbarry Harbour in Richtung Norden fahren, dürfen nach dem Start des 12-km-Rennens die Termonbarry-Schleuse stromaufwärts passieren, stromabwärts ist die Durchfahrt während der Sperrung jedoch nicht gestattet.
Aufgrund der Enge der Schifffahrt auf diesem Abschnitt des Shannon und der damit verbundenen Sicherheitsrisiken durch die Vermischung von Schiffsverkehr und Schwimmern wird diese vorübergehende Sperrung als unerlässlich angesehen.
Bootsfahrern, die diesen Abschnitt der Wasserstraße befahren wollen, wird empfohlen, ihre Reise am Freitag, den 16. Mai, vor der Sperrung anzutreten.
Wir sind uns bewusst, dass diese Bekanntmachung relativ kurzfristig herausgegeben wurde, und wir entschuldigen uns für die Verzögerung. Waterways Ireland ist bestrebt, solche Ereignisse so früh wie möglich anzukündigen, und wir danken Ihnen für Ihre Geduld, Ihre Kooperation und Ihr Verständnis.

Temporary Navigation Closure

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and owners of vessels that Lock 3, Main Line, Grand Canal is temporarily closed for essential maintenance and repairs until 20th May 2022. Passage through the lock is not possible.

Waterways Ireland thanks its customers for their understanding in this matter.

Schleuse 3, Hauptstrecke, Grand Canal, Dublin – bis 20. Mai 2022
Waterways Ireland möchte Kapitäne und Bootsbesitzer darauf hinweisen, dass die Schleuse 3, Main Line, Grand Canal, wegen notwendiger Wartungs- und Reparaturarbeiten bis zum 20. Mai 2022 vorübergehend geschlossen ist. Eine Durchfahrt durch die Schleuse ist nicht möglich.
Waterways Ireland dankt seinen Kunden für ihr Verständnis in dieser Angelegenheit.
