On the afternoon / evening of 2 May 2026, three separate vessels sustained damage following contact with a submerged object. One vessel subsequently sank as a result of the incident.
The hazard is assessed as being located approx. 2m from the red navigation marker (as indicated in the accompanying image), at an estimated depth of 0.5m below the water surface. As this section of the navigation is particularly narrow, and considering the extent of vessel damage incurred, Waterways Ireland has determined that closure of the channel is necessary in the interests of navigation safety.
No vessels are permitted to transit this section, except:

- Vessels engaged in recovery operations
- Authorised workboats operating under the direction of Waterways Ireland
- Masters of vessels upstream of the closure seeking to return to the main navigation channel are required to contact Waterways Ireland in advance to obtain guidance and authorisation, the first point of contact being Battlebridge Lock Keeper..

Waterways Ireland acknowledges that this closure will impact waterways users seeking access from Leitrim up towards Lough Allen, particularly over the Bank Holiday weekend, and regrets any inconvenience caused. This measure is necessary to mitigate the risk of further incidents.

Navigation auf dem Shannon – Sperrung der Schifffahrtswege zwischen Leitrim und Battlebridge, Ausgestellt: 3. Mai 2026
Waterways Ireland teilt den Kapitänen von Schiffen auf dem Shannon und dem Shannon–Erne-Wasserstraßennetz mit, dass der Schifffahrtskanal zwischen Leitrim und Battlebridge aufgrund einer unter Wasser liegenden Gefahr bis auf Weiteres für alle Schiffe gesperrt ist.
Das Hindernis befindet sich zwischen Green 106 und Red 117, Seite 19 des Navigationshandbuchs für die Wasserstraßen Shannon und Erne.
Am Nachmittag/Abend des 2. Mai 2026 erlitten drei verschiedene Schiffe Schäden, nachdem sie mit einem unter Wasser liegenden Objekt in Berührung gekommen waren. Ein Schiff sank infolge des Vorfalls.
Das Hindernis befindet sich schätzungsweise ca. 2 m von der roten Navigationsmarkierung entfernt (wie in der beigefügten Abbildung dargestellt) und liegt in einer geschätzten Tiefe von 0,5 m unter der Wasseroberfläche. Da dieser Abschnitt der Wasserstraße besonders eng ist und angesichts des Ausmaßes der entstandenen Schäden an den Schiffen hat Waterways Ireland entschieden, dass die Sperrung des Fahrwassers im Interesse der Navigationssicherheit erforderlich ist.
Es ist keinem Schiff gestattet, diesen Abschnitt zu befahren, mit Ausnahme von:

- Schiffen, die Bergungsarbeiten durchführen
- Zugelassenen Arbeitsboote, die unter der Leitung von Waterways Ireland operieren
- Kapitäne von Schiffen stromaufwärts der Sperrung, die in den Hauptschifffahrtskanal zurückkehren möchten, müssen sich vorab mit Waterways Ireland in Verbindung setzen, um Anweisungen und eine Genehmigung einzuholen; erster Ansprechpartner ist die Schleuse Battlebridge

Waterways Ireland ist sich bewusst, dass diese Sperrung Auswirkungen auf die Nutzer der Wasserstraßen haben wird, die von Leitrim aus in Richtung Lough Allen fahren möchten, insbesondere am Feiertagswochenende, und bedauert die dadurch entstandenen Unannehmlichkeiten. Diese Maßnahme ist notwendig, um das Risiko weiterer Zwischenfälle zu verringern.
