Major Fishing Competition

Sunday 10 September

Waterways Ireland wishes advise masters and owners of vessels that a major fishing competition will take place on Lough Ree on Sunday 10 September.
A large number of lake boats will be launched and recovered from Coosan Point throughout the day. All masters are requested to proceed with due caution and keep a look-out for conflicting traffic.

Waterways Ireland thanks its customers for their cooperation in this matter.

Opening Schedule

Waterways Ireland wishes advise masters and owners of vessels of the current schedule. The lock keeper can be contacted at the following number

087-7972998 only during the hours of operation as shown below.

Fri 4th August 2:00pm – 5:00pm
Fri 11th August 10:00am – 1:00pm
Fri 18th August 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Fri 25th August 10:00am – 1:00pm

Masters are advised to contact the ESB Ardnacrusha hydroelectric power station (00353 (0)87 9970131) 48 hours in advance of commencing their journey to book passage through the locks at Ardnacrusha.

It is advised NOT to undertake a voyage if more than one turbine is operating (20MW), due to the increased velocity of flow in the navigation channel, which can be dangerous. To ascertain automatically in real time how many turbines are running, users can phone 00353 (0)87 6477229.

Triathlon Swimming Event

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters that the swimming element of the Lough Key Triathlon event will take place in the vicinity of Castle Island and the Forest Park recreational facilities in Lough Key on Sun 3rd Sep from 0900 hrs until 1200 hrs.
Masters of vessels are requested to note the advice of marshals when passing near the swimming course and to proceed at slow speed and with minimum wash.

LONGFORD MARATHON

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all Masters and users that to facilitate the annual Longford marathon road race on Sun 27 Aug 2017 lifting bridge operations will be restricted accordingly.
The following air draft restrictions will apply to the lifting bridges, which will be closed during the time periods indicated below.

  • Shannon Navigation – Rooskey Bridge (1015 hrs to 1245 hrs)
    The air draft at Roosky Bridge at Ordinary Summer Level is 10ft (3.025m). There is an air draft gauge erected at the bridge on both Upper and Lower approaches. The Lock keeper can be contacted during lock opening hours at 00 353 (0)71 96 38018 for further information.
  • Shannon Navigation – Tarmonbarry Bridge (0945 hrs to 1215 hrs)
    The air draft at Tarmonbarry at Ordinary Summer Level is 7’9″ (2.35m). The Lock keeper can be contacted during lock opening hours at 00 353 (0)43 3326117 or (0)87 9222070 for further information.
  • Royal Canal – Begnagh Bridge
    The bridge will be closed from 0830hrs to 1015 hrs. The Lock keeper may be contacted on 00 353 (0)87 9151400.
