Dangers of Drone Activity in the Vicinity of

Athlone Town and Custume Barracks

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all vessel owners and operators on the dangers of using drones around Athlone Town and especially in the vicinity of Custume Barracks, Athlone.
The National Aeromedical Emergency Helicopter operates out of Custume Barracks, Athlone and can launch at short notice.
The possibility of a drone coming into contact with the National Emergency Aeromedical ambulance helicopter based in Custume Barracks, Athlone, is ever present.
Under Statutory Instruments (S.I.) No. 563 of 2015, drone use is not permitted in the vicinity of other aircraft, over urban areas or within 30 metres of any person, vessel, vehicle or structure not under your direct control. As such drones should not be flown within 2km of Athlone Marina.
Outside this exclusion zone, Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all Drone users engaged in flying of the inherent dangers attached to this activity in locations where the aeromedical helicopter or other aircraft are active.
A drone in the air will always remain a very small target to see for the crew of the aircraft particularly if:

    • The weather is inclement
    • There is a high workload placed on the aeromedical crew
    • There is difficulty in sighting due to slanting sunshine in early morning or late evening
    • Visibility is poor due to fog, mist or rain

Drone users should risk assess their location prior to launching their drone, for aircraft traffic, suitability of their location for drone use, weather and water conditions.
The absence of drone use in the above areas will always give enhanced safety and security to the crew and patients of the aeromedical service.

Waterways Ireland thanks all vessel owners and operators for their co-operation in relation to this matter.
