Niall Galway has taken excellent photos last weekend during a visit to the construction site at the Meelick-/Victoria lock. I think this documentation of the exchange of the lower lock gates shows once in a while how much effort is required for the maintenance of the „Inland Waterways Ireland“ to make it possible for us to sail from Killaloe to Beleek.
But let the photos speak for themselves. To get to the photo album, please click on the picture.
Have fun watching them.
Many thanks to Niall, who provided me with the photos.

SHANNON – ERNE WATERWAY

Portora Lock Gates – 2017 Christmas Period

Waterways Ireland has been advised by Rivers Agency of the following arrangements relating to Portora Lock.

Portora Lock gates are currently in operation due to water levels in Lough Erne.

When operational, the Lock gates are manned from 08.00am to 10.30pm daily to facilitate navigation. Given forecast rainfall and projected water flow discharge rates, it is anticipated that the Lock Gates will still be in operation over the Christmas holiday period. If this proves to be the case, DfI Rivers will be running a reduced Lock Keeper service on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day as follows:

  • Christmas Eve – the lock gates will be manned from 8.00am to 6.00pm.
  • Christmas Day – the lock gates will be unmanned.
  • Boxing Day– the lock gates will be manned as normal from 8.00am to 10.30pm.

Rivers Agency will however have a member of staff on-call to operate the Lock Gates in case of emergencies during the period from 6pm on Christmas Eve to 8am on Boxing Day. The on-call staff member can be contacted on 028 6638 8529. Rivers Agency would stress that this is intended for emergency navigation only.

Waterways Ireland and Rivers Agency would like to apologise for any inconvenience these arrangements may cause and ask for your co-operation and understanding.
