Boat Passage in/out of Dublin

Grand Canal 2013

For boat passages in or out of Dublin on the Grand Canal Main Line between Locks 1 & 12 this passage should generally be undertaken as a single movement in one day.

A minimum of two working days’ prior notice of intended travel is requested to be given to the Waterways Ireland Eastern Regional Office, to facilitate the necessary staffing assistance arrangements. To allow time for passage boats will only be permitted entry before 9:00am at either the Lock 1 or Lock 12 depending on direction of travel.  This may be earlier depending on the number of boats making passage.

Please also ensure you have the following before making passage:

    • adequate fuel on board
    • competent and adequate crew to operate the boat and locks                            (minimum crew of 3)
    • a lock key on board your boat
    • mooring lines of adequate length to handle vessel through a lock                    (approx 15m length)
    • no known mechanical problems with your boat

Boats will not be permitted to travel the system if their pass

age is considered to be unsafe by Waterways Ireland and / or if they do not have the appropriate permit.

BOAT PASSAGE IN / OUT OF DUBLIN
ROYAL CANAL 2013

For boat passages in or out of Dublin on the Royal Canal between Spencer Dock & Lock 12 these should generally only be undertaken by pre-arrangement with Waterways Ireland Eastern Regional Office to facilitate the necessary staffing assistance arrangements..

If intending to pass the Irish Rail Newcomen Lifting Bridge a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice to the Eastern Regional Office for the scheduled dates is required.  There is a restriction on the numbers of boats that can pass for each lift so this will be operated on a ‘first come first served’ basis.  At time of making contact, boaters should have available the length, beam, water and air drafts of their craft.  The schedule dates and further details are given below.

    1. Irish Rail have been requested to facilitate opening on the above dates.
    2. Waterways Ireland requires 2 weeks’ notice from boaters for use of these lifts; should there not be demand for a particular date, Irish Rail will then be notified by WI that this lift is cancelled
    3. A maximum number of boats passing will be implemented to keep to the times given above for the planned lifts (8 no. for the Tues lifts, and 16 no. for the weekend lifts)
    4. he schedule will be kept under review and if additional dates are required these can be requested from Irish Rail.

Athlone and Banagher

Flow Measurement

Waterways Ireland has been informed by the Office of Public Works (OPW) of its intention to conduct flow measurements in Athlone and Banagher between Wed 13 and Thurs 21 Mar 2013. The measuring instrument will be lowered from the bridge to the river and then moved laterally across the bridge arches to take the measurements. The procedure will only take a matter of minutes at each arch. Masters approaching the navigation arch of these bridges should be prepared to stop short and await instructions from OPW staff as to when it is safe to proceed through the arch. Underwater Inspection of Weirs

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters of vessels that underwater inspection of weirs shall commence Tuesday 19th March and will be completed on Wednesday 3rd April.
Masters approaching weirs should be prepared to stop short and await instructions from the dive safety officer before proceeding.

End of Winter Mooring Period

Masters and owners are advised that the winter mooring period ends on Sun 31 Mar 2013 thereafter Navigation Bye-law No. 17(3) applies i.e. vessels should not berth in the same harbour for longer than the statutory period of 5 consecutive days nor more than a total of 7 days in any one month.
