Update on emergency works between Locks 1 & 2
Waterways Ireland wishes to update all users of the Grand Canal on the breach that occurred in the canal between the 1st and 2nd locks in the vicinity of Devoy Road, Kilmainham, Dublin 8.
The problem was caused by a rupture in a pipeline owned by Irish Water which is laid under the bed of the Grand Canal thereby causing the canal water to drain away through the opening in the ruptured pipe.
Irish Water, in consultation with our Operations Team are currently installing a dam around the affected area to allow the restoration of water levels to the canal. Subsequently, Irish Water will undertake a repair to the leaking pipe which should be completed by early August, after which time we would expect that the canal would again be open to navigation.
Navigation will not possible during this time due to the emergency works necessary.
Waterways Ireland acknowledge that the closure of the Grand Canal between the 1st and 2nd locks causes inconvenience to boating in the area. These restrictions are necessary and regrettably beyond our control. We wish to thank our customers for their cooperation in this matter.

Aktueller Stand der Notfallarbeiten zwischen den Schleusen 1 & 2
Waterways Ireland möchte alle Benutzer des Grand Canal über die Bruchstelle im Kanal zwischen der ersten und zweiten Schleuse in der Nähe der Devoy Road, Kilmainham, Dublin 8, informieren.
Das Problem wurde durch einen Bruch in einer Rohrleitung von Irish Water verursacht, die unter dem Bett des Grand Canal verlegt wird, wodurch das Kanalwasser durch die Öffnung in dem gebrochenen Rohr abfließt.
Irish Water errichtet in Absprache mit unserem Operations Team derzeit einen Damm um das betroffene Gebiet, um die Wiederherstellung des Wasserspiegels im Kanal zu ermöglichen. Anschließend wird Irish Water eine Reparatur an der undichten Leitung durchführen, die bis Anfang August abgeschlossen sein sollte, danach würden wir erwarten, dass der Kanal wieder für die Schifffahrt geöffnet wird.
Die Navigation ist in dieser Zeit aufgrund der notwendigen Notfallmaßnahmen nicht möglich.
Die irischen Wasserstraßen erkennen an, dass die Schließung des Grand Canal zwischen der 1. und 2. Schleuse Unannehmlichkeiten für das Bootfahren in diesem Gebiet verursacht. Diese Einschränkungen sind notwendig und bedauerlicherweise außerhalb unserer Kontrolle. Wir danken unseren Kunden für die Zusammenarbeit in dieser Angelegenheit.
