Permits

Waterways Ireland acknowledge the ongoing cooperation and compliance of customers on the navigations. However, Waterways Ireland recognises that there are still some customers who need to comply with the Canal Bye-law requirements and purchase a Combined Mooring and Passage Permit (CMP).
CMP’s cost €126 per year and permit the holder to cruise continuously and gain lock passage across all these navigations from St. Mullins in Co. Carlow to Dublin and as far west as the Shannon Navigation.
Masters should now note that vessels without a valid permit and/or not displaying the appropriate permit may in future be declined lock passage.
Masters and owners are requested to purchase their canal permits at the earliest opportunity to avoid disappointment when their cruising plans are interrupted.
Permits may be purchased from Shane Anderson, Assistant Inspector of Navigation

Dublin Spencer Dock Sea Lock

Temporary Closure for Works

Waterways Ireland wishes to notify its customers that Spencer Dock Sea Lock, Royal Canal, will be periodically closed for navigation until mid June due to emergency works requirements for the road bridge (Scherzer Bridge) on North Wall Quay.
Dublin City Council has advised of works required to the bridge, including scaffolding that will effectively prevent navigation beneath the bridge into Spencer Dock over this period. Waterways Ireland has however arranged for passage aligning with planned Newcomen Bridge lifts to be available (refer to MN9/2015 for dates), but outside of these times there will be no entry or exit through the Sea Lock until completion of the works.
Please contact the Eastern Regional Office at 01 868 0148 if any further details are required. Waterways Ireland regrets any inconvenience that this may cause its customers.

Fire Fighting

Following a recent fire onboard a vessel in Grand Canal Basin, Dublin, Waterways Ireland reminds masters and owners of vessels to be conversant with the fire fighting requirements of the various navigation bye-laws for their particular vessels.
Attention should be given to the provision of in-date fire extinguishers and also the need for gas installations to be correctly installed and regularly maintained.
Both the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) United Kingdom and the Maritime Safety Directorate, Dublin provides further guidance on these matters for recreational craft.
