Grand, Royal Canals and

Barrow Navigation

Planned Winter Closures 2013-2014

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise Masters and owners of vessels that the following planned closures will be in place for the winter of 2013-2014.

Grand Canal–Main Line  
Circular Line,Dublin The Circular Line of the Grand Canal is closed to navigation between Lock C3 (Upper Mount Street) and Lock C5 (Leeson Street) from October to December 2013 to facilitate the installation of new lock gates.
Ardclough, Co. Kildare The Grand Canal is closed to navigation on the 13th Level, downstream of Ponsonby Bridge near Ardclough, Co. Kildare, from November 2013 to February 2014 to facilitate works by Kildare County Council associated with the construction of a new distribution watermain.
Sallins, Co. Kildare The public moorings immediately East and West of Sallins Bridge are closed until mid-March 2014 to facilitate the construction of new houseboat and public jetty facilities.
Ballycommon to Clonony,
Co. Offaly
The Grand Canal is closed between the 34th Lock at Clonony and the 21st Lock at Ballycommon from Monday 4th November until Friday 20th December 2013 to facilitate maintenance works.

Vicarstown, Co. Laois Possible closure of the canal in the Vicarstown area to facilitate bridge repairs – further details to follow.
Royal Canal
Spencer Dock,
 
Newcomen Bridge There will be no further lifts of Newcomen railway bridge until the 2014 boating season.
Ashtown to Castleknock, Dublin 15 The towpath of the Royal Canal between Ashtown (10th Lock) and Castleknock (12th Lock) is closed from October 2013 to February 2014, to facilitate the construction of new cycle path facilities.  An alternative route for towpath users will be sign-posted.
41st Level, Mosstown,
Co. Longford
The Royal Canal is closed at Mosstown until further notice due to a collapsed culvert.
Barrow Navigation No closures are planned.

SHANNON –ERNE WATERWAY

LOCK 6 BALLINAMORE CLOSURE

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all Masters of vessels and users of the waterways that the Shannon – Erne Waterway will be closed to navigation at Lock 6 Ballinamore from 14th November 2013 until early April 2014 to facilitate the necessary repairs to lock gates.  A section of the canal bank walkway adjacent to Lock 6 Ballinamore will also be closed for the durations of the works.
Waterways Ireland regrets any inconvenience that this may cause its customers.

Shannon Navigation Prohibition Electricity (Supply) ACTS 1927–1985

Waterways Ireland has been requested to advise masters and owners of the following notice issued by the ESB. The ELECTRICITY SUPPLY BOARD by virtue of the powers on that behalf vested in us by Section 106 of the Electricity (Supply) Act 1927, and all other enabling powers do hereby for the purposes of the operation of the Shannon Works and for the exercise of the powers and for the performance of the duties and functions conferred and imposed on us and notwithstanding any enactment declaring the River Shannon to be a public navigable river ORDER THAT navigation shall be and the same is hereby prohibited in or upon the navigation locks at Ardnacrusha Generating Station during the following period of time, that is to say, from Thursday November 1st 2012 to Sunday March 31st 2013 (both dates inclusive) being the period of time required by us for the purposes aforesaid and WE HEREBY DECLARE that the passage of any person with any boat, barge, lighter or other vessel in or upon the navigation locks as is hereinbefore specified shall be and the same is hereby prohibited during the period of time hereinbefore specified.

SHANNON NAVIGATION Verbot Elektrizitätsversorgungsgesetz 1927–1985

Waterways Ireland wurde gebeten, Kapitäne und Eigner über die folgende Mitteilung der ESB zu informieren. Die ELECTRICITY SUPPLY BOARD macht gemäß den ihr durch Abschnitt 106 des Elektrizitätsversorgungsgesetzes von 1927 übertragenen Befugnissen und allen anderen uns übertragenen Befugnissen hiermit zum Zwecke des Betriebs der Shannon-Anlagen und zur Ausübung der uns übertragenen und auferlegten Befugnisse und Pflichten und ungeachtet aller Rechtsvorschriften, die den Fluss Shannon zu einem öffentlichen schiffbaren Fluss erklären, ANGEORDNET, dass die Schifffahrt in den Schleusen des Kraftwerks Ardnacrusha während des folgenden Zeitraums, d. h. vom Donnerstag, 1. November 2012, bis Sonntag, 31. März 2013 (beide Tage inklusive), da dies der Zeitraum ist, den wir für die oben genannten Zwecke benötigen, und WIR ERKLÄREN HIERMIT, dass die Durchfahrt von Personen mit Booten, Lastkähnen, Leichtern oder anderen Wasserfahrzeugen in oder auf den oben genannten Schleusen während des oben genannten Zeitraums verboten ist.
