Public Consultation on the introduction of revised Canals and Shannon Navigation Bye Laws
19 June to 02 October 2023
Waterways Ireland is inviting members of the public and interested parties to have their say on proposed revisions to the Shannon Navigation and Canals bye-laws by making a submission to a public consultation, which opens on Monday 19 June 2023.
The consultation covers the Shannon Navigation (including the Shannon-Erne Waterway) and the Royal and Grand canals and the Barrow Line & Navigation. The consultation runs from 19th June to 2nd October 2023.
There are three main ways in which you can learn about the proposed changes and participate in the public consultation.
Public Meetings are planned where staff will provide information on the revisions and feedback can be given.

Following the public consultation, Waterways Ireland will review the submissions make any necessary changes to the byelaws and submit them to the Minister for approval to proceed.
The closing date for submissions to the public consultation is Monday, 2nd October 2023.

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all masters of vessels and waterways users of the Royal Canal that a canoe polo event will be taking place in Kilcock Harbour on Sunday 18 June 2023.
Kilcock Harbour on Sunday 18 June 2023
In order to facilitate the event, navigation in this area will be very restricted from 1500hrs on Saturday 17 June to 1900hrs on Sunday 18 June 2023. Vessels should move away from any of the moorings in the harbour area for the duration of the event, and will only be able to navigate past the event if allowed to proceed by the event organisers between event activities through a prior arrangement.
Masters of vessels are therefore requested to proceed with additional caution in the vicinity of the event and to obey any instructions given by event stewards.
